Psst … MiFi now available at Sprint.com

This weekend I had the pleasure of “test driving” the new Sprint MiFi. This is an incredible device that I expect will dramatically advance the Mobility Revolution.

If you haven’t heard of the MiFi - here’s how I’ve been describing it to folks: You know that box you have at home which is your broadband router? And you know the box sitting next to it which is your WiFi access point? Well, combine those two boxes together into a battery powered device about the size of half of a deck of playing cards. Wherever you go (within Sprint coverage), you have broadband connectivity for up to five devices. Today, those devices are probably laptops or netbooks. But increasingly, they will include media players, game machines, cameras, and all kinds of other devices.

Imagine how this kind of always/anywhere connectivity will change the way we live our lives and do our jobs.

And it’s available now at Sprint.com! (It’s not yet available through Everything Plus, but…)

Nice looking unit, and I’d love to have one, but there is no way I can justify the cost of the service unless I REPLACE my current wired broadband service for my laptop with wireless service.

I’ve been measuring my laptop usage over the past 6 months, and only one of those was I under Sprint’s data cap of 5GB/month. (I don’t download movies, or music, I have no P2P torrents - in fact don’t even use have any torrent apps - etc. I’m not a gamer, I rarely IM. What I do do is put my photos on Flickr, the occasional short video on YouTube, and administer or moderate a number of sites.

If just by doing that I exceed Sprint’s new limits on unlimited, there is sadly no way I can use one of these nice little units. :o(

(Waiting for Sprint’s “4G” services to come to my area (might be long wait even though we are already covered by ClearWire and Sprint on separate services) and hoping the cost and limits allow for real world use.)

For now I’ll just to continue to use my wired cable service (with dial-up back-up) and the WiFi at Starbucks and such.
